Northern Trust (Nasdaq: NTRS) announced today that the Northern Trust Purchase Prize, an annual gift of artwork selected from EXPO CHICAGO, will be donated to the DePaul Art Museum at the fifth annual EXPO CHICAGO (Sept. 22 – 25, 2016) at Navy Pier’s Festival Hall.

As Presenting Sponsor of EXPO CHICAGO and a long-time supporter of arts and culture, Northern Trust will purchase a work of art to be added to the DePaul Art Museum’s permanent collection. Julie Rodrigues Widholm, Director and Chief Curator of the DePaul Art Museum, will be joined by Dia Weil, DePaul University Trustee, in selecting the artwork from one of the exhibiting EXPOSURE galleries at EXPO CHICAGO. The EXPOSURE section allows younger galleries a presence at a major international art fair, elevating the profile of an up-and-coming gallery and bolstering the career of an emerging artist. The selected artwork will be announced during a special unveiling at EXPO CHICAGO on Saturday, September 24.

“Northern Trust has a longstanding history of supporting arts and culture in the communities we serve,” said Mac MacLellan, Executive Vice President of Wealth Management at Northern Trust. “The Northern Trust Purchase Prize furthers our commitment to the arts by supporting an emerging gallery and the career of a newer artist while allowing the work to be enjoyed by patrons of the DePaul Art Museum for years to come.”

Named a “hidden gem” by Travel and Leisure magazine in 2015, DePaul Art Museum presents four-to-six original or touring exhibitions per year, and has a permanent collection of nearly 3,000 objects, with strengths in international modern and contemporary art.

“DePaul Art Museum is honored to be this year’s recipient of the Northern Trust Purchase Prize,” said Julie Rodrigues Widholm, Director and Chief Curator of the DePaul Art Museum. “This prize naturally aligns with our commitment to bring visibility to lesser-known artists. We are thrilled to support the work of international up-and-coming artists from emerging galleries.”

In previous years, the Northern Trust Purchase Prize was awarded to:

  • 2015: JJ PEET’s Jaw X, displayed at On Stellar Rays Gallery, donated to The Arts Club of Chicago and chosen by Arts Club Executive Director Janine Mileaf and Chairman of the Board Helyn Goldenberg;
  • 2014: Elise Ferguson’s Saree, displayed at Romer Young Gallery, chosen by a jury led by Michael Darling, James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and placed in the permanent collection at Northern Trust;
  • 2013: Jorinde Voigt’s Horizon (Berlin II), displayed at David Nolan Gallery and Corbett vs. Dempsey Gallery, donated to The Art Institute of Chicago and selected by Mark Pascale, Janet and Craig Duchossois Curator of Prints and Drawings.

Now in its fourth year as Presenting Sponsor, Northern Trust will host the return of “Exchange by Northern Trust: An Interactive Conversation Around the Art of Collecting.” Located in the Northern Trust Anchor Lounge, this series of private discussions tailored exclusively for invited VIP guests will provide insight and expertise on the art of collecting and feature internationally renowned speakers in the field of contemporary art.
