Butte, Mont. - August 18, 2017 - The solar eclipse on Monday, August 21, 2017, will bring varying levels of darkness to much of NorthWestern Energy's service territory in Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska.

In Nebraska, our Grand Island and Kearney natural-gas service locations are in the path of totality and will likely experience several minutes of darkness at the peak of the eclipse. Communities we serve in Montana and South Dakota are expected to experience lesser levels of darkness due to this natural event.

NorthWestern Energy, in coordination with other utilities across the country, has made preparations for the eclipse. NorthWestern does not anticipate any significant increase in electric demand or service disruptions related to the eclipse.

NorthWestern provides electricity to its customers from a diversified portfolio of generation that relies heavily on hydro, wind, coal and natural gas. In Montana, more than 60 percent of the electricity we provide to customers comes from renewable sources, largely water and wind. Solar is a very small percentage of how we generate electricity in Montana.

The company also reminds eclipse viewers to use caution in viewing the eclipse and to use only approved viewing glasses and appropriate when looking directly at the sun.

We plan to post eclipse photos and videos on our social media channels. Keep up with NorthWestern Energy news on Facebook and on Twitter (@Northwestern_MT).
