Details of the order

Nova had to clear the selection process set up by the Chinese IC manufacturer for shortlisting of providers for both Dimensional and Materials metrology solutions. The Company cleared the selection process after which it bagged multiple orders for both in-line XPS materials metrology systems and Optical CD systems, along with advanced modelling software engines. The Chinese IC manufacturer is expected to use Nova's solutions for its R&D efforts as well as production lines covering FEOL (front-end-of-line) and BEOL (back-end-of-line) applications in CMP (Chemical Mechanical Planarization), Etch, and Deposition.

CMP, a key enabler in transistor scaling, is a process used to flatten a wafer surface using a combination of physical and chemical forces. The planarization process is critical for improving device performance and production yield.

In semiconductor manufacturing, the etch process creates patterned features on the wafer by selectively removing material. Integrated circuit manufacturing typically requires that the wafer undergo multiple patterning cycles, where conductor and dielectric features are etched according to the pattern defined at the preceding photolithography step.

The ability to deposit thin films of materials onto a substrate is the foundation of semiconductor technology. There are various types of deposition processes caused by chemical reactions; such as Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), thermal oxidation, epitaxial growth, etc.

Nova expects to start shipping to China in Q2 2018 and will be supplying for the next 12 months. The Company expects total order value from the Chinese IC manufacturer to be over $20 million.

Commenting on getting the multiple orders from Chinese IC manufacturer, Gabriel Waisman, Chief Business Officer of Nova, said:

?We are very excited by the selection and expected business stream from this major customer in China. We continue to expand our presence in China with multiple wins over the last few months in newly established Memory and Foundry customers, reaffirming the strength of our product portfolio and its unique competitive position. This major selection solidifies the value that our synergistic portfolio, which combines multiple technologies with advanced software and hardware capabilities, brings to our customers.?
