ECSO drives EU contract for Public-Private Partnership to support R&I

Hamburg, Germany and Straßbourg, France. On July 5, 2016 as a founding partner of the European Cyber Security Organization (ECSO), NXP signed the contract for a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with the European Commission to establish a strategic alliance in cybersecurity. ECSO is a non-profit association, set up by NXP and other leading stakeholders with the ambition to develop a trusted cyber ecosystem in Europe. As a dedicated member, NXP has been actively involved in the setup and contributed key topics from its R&D security roadmap to the partnership.

Following the signature, European Union will invest €450 million in this partnership as part of its research & innovation program Horizon 2020. In return, ECSO members are to jointly invest an additional €1.3 billion into research and development of innovative and trusted cybersecurity solutions, products and services. 'Trusted components are fundamental for market development of innovative applications like IoT, smart systems and revolutionary solutions for instance in automatic driving', said Senior Vice President and General Manager Secure Card Solutions Ulrich Huewels, who represented NXP at the signing ceremony.

At the first ECSO member meeting held in Brussels on July 7, NXP's Ulrich Huewels has been elected into the ECSO board of directors. Eva Schulz-Kamm, heading NXP Global Political Affairs, has joined the Partnership Board which is the main interface of ECSO to the European Commission.

NXP continues to advocate Europe's proven certification schemes such as Common Criteria and SOGIS. In addition, a balanced certification scheme with baseline security and privacy requirements is essential for IoT devices. Therefore, NXP supports the creation of a mandatory EU Trust Label demanding security-by-design features.
