OKLAHOMA CITY - When Alan Green, Mustang Schools' director of facilities, was looking for ways to save money, Green decided to enroll in OG&E SmartHours for schools. In one year, Mustang Schools have saved more than $350,000 on the program. Nearly 1,800 schools across Oklahoma are saving big money - $2 million collectively - on their energy costs, thanks to the program, designed specifically for K-12 schools.

SmartHours for schools is a time-based program specifically designed around the school day, with on-peak hours from 3 - 7. It's designed to allow schools to take advantage of the program's heavily discounted off-peak savings, while at the same time helping OG&E lower the peak demand for power.

'When you're talking about a school district and it's the tax payers' money, this makes perfect sense,' Green said. 'Peak hours start as the schools are clearing out for the day. Why wouldn't we do this? It was a no-risk venture to sign up for the program.'

SmartHours is available for residential, business and commercial/industrial customers as well, and is one of many innovative programs in a robust portfolio of energy- and money-saving offerings, according to OG&E Marketing Director Angela Nichols. 'There's something for everybody, from various rate-based programs to various ways to pay your bill, which helps our customers find something that works for them. It's all about providing choice for our customers,' Nichols said.

She added that in the last three years, OG&E customers have helped the company decrease its peak demand by more than 260MW, the equivalent of about half the output of one of OG&E's smaller power plants. 'Those in the SmartHours program have accounted for about 140MW of that reduction,' she said.

As Oklahoma's oldest and largest electric utility, OG&E delivers reliable electricity at an affordable cost and in an environmentally responsible manner. Throughout its more than 100-year history, the company has demonstrated energy innovation and leadership by implementing new technologies - such as wind, SmartHours and solar - that improve the lives of its customers.

A subsidiary of Oklahoma City-based OGE Energy Corp., OG&E serves approximately 830,000 customers in a 30,000 square feet service area in Oklahoma and western Arkansas. With about 6,800 megawatts of capacity, OG&E generates electricity using low-sulfur coal, natural gas, wind and solar.
