Kutubu Community help clean up plastic rubbish

Plastic bags are a threat to the environment as well as the human population and must be disposed of in a responsible manner - this was the message from Oil Search to the Communities in and around the Lake Kutubu area this week.

Oil Search's Safety and Environment team took this message to the Community on Sunday 3 June, as part of the World Environment Day celebrations. World Environment Day is celebrated on 5 June.

Apart from the awareness programme conducted, the team, together with the community in the Kaimari area, located outside the Oil Search camp at Moro, also conducted a major Clean-a-thon, removing 10 tonnes of rubbish, mostly plastic waste.

This was then taken to the Oil Search waste treatment facility to be disposed of.

"The theme for the 2018 world environment day is "Beat Plastic Pollution" and is a call for individuals to take charge of their surroundings and understand the severity of using plastic in daily life,'' said Julian Fowles, the Executive General Manager PNG Business Unit for Oil Search.

"Waste management is becoming a serious issue not only in urban communities but also rural communities such as Kaimari and requires input from all stakeholders for a long term and sustainable solution."

The Oil Search Safety and Environment Department, with the help of the Lake Kutubu Wildlife Management Area Committee organised a Clean-a-thon on Sunday 3 June 2018 at Kaimari market to commemorate World Environment Day on 5 June.

"Our team also used this opportunity to conduct awareness sessions on plastics which are pervasively polluting our surroundings and posing a threat to human and environmental health.

"The local communities were informed on how to segregate the different waste streams and the best disposal options available for each of these streams.''
