- Industry-first upgrade allows use of existing data to streamline
chemical substance information compilation and management workflows -
OKI (TOKYO:6703) has upgraded the compilation functions of its
COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R, an information system used to track chemical
substances in products, to ensure compliance with the requirements of
the RoHS1 Directive and REACH2 Regulations. The
improvements also make the information system compatible with JAMP
MSDSplus (Ver. 4), JAMP AIS (Ver. 4), and JGPSSI (Ver. 4.2) formats (due
to be released), the latest industry-standard survey formats recommended
by JAMP3 and JGPSSI.4 By allowing the evaluation
and compilation of chemical substance information consisting of data
from both legacy and newer formats--an industry-first--the upgraded
COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R streamlines workflows related to compiling and
managing chemical substance information. The upgraded product will be
available from June 1, 2012.
COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R manages and compiles information on chemical
substances occurring in products to ensure compliance with the
requirements of the RoHS Directive and REACH Regulations.
COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R also manages related documents. OKI has supplied
this product for the electricity and electronics industries.
"The upgraded function relies on a technique that groups CAS Numbers,5
the unique numbers assigned to individual chemical substances, making it
possible for the first time to compile the chemical substances occurring
in products based on information contained in multiple survey formats,
including older format versions, thereby confirming compliance with laws
and regulations," says Sei Yano, Senior Vice President, responsible for
Solutions and Services at OKI. "This function reduces the time-consuming
manual labor by company personnel previously required to collect and
adjust information. The upgraded COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R streamlines
survey, evaluation, and compilation workflows. COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R also
supports the latest industry-standard formats, including JAMP MSDSplus,
JAMP AIS, and JGPSSI. These functions expedite the collection of
chemical substance information and allow more efficient communication of
information up and down the supply chain."
Through products like COINServ®-COSMOS-R/R, OKI continues to provide
vital support for corporate environmental efforts.
[Glossary]
1 RoHS Directive
Adopted in July 2006 by the European
Union, the RoHS Directive restricts the use of certain hazardous
substances in computers, communications equipment, home appliances, and
other electrical/electronic products. (RoHS stands for "Restriction of
the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic
equipment.")
2 REACH Regulations
Enacted in June 2007 by the European
Union, the REACH Regulations require manufacturers and importers of
chemical substances to register and evaluate the chemical substances
that they manufacture or import. For substances of very high concern,
the REACH Regulations also mandate prior authorization from the proper
authorities. The use of substances associated with even higher risk is
restricted. REACH stands for "Registration, Evaluation, Authorization
and Restriction of Chemicals."
3 JAMP (Joint Article Management Promotion-consortium)
JAMP
was established in September 2006 as an initiative to promote practical,
effective mechanisms for the smooth disclosure and dissemination of
information concerning chemical substances and other materials across
the supply chain, based on suitable information management.
4 JGPSSI (Japan Green Procurement Survey Standardization
Initiative)
The JGPSSI is a council established to standardize the
list of substances targeted by surveys and survey response formats,
thereby reducing the labor required for surveys undertaken to identify
chemical substances in various parts and materials and improving the
quality of responses received.
5 CAS Numbers
Also known as CAS Registry Numbers. A CAS
Number is a unique numeric identifier assigned to each chemical by the
chemical substance registry system operated and managed by CAS (Chemical
Abstracts Service), a division of the American Chemical Society.
