Industrial Microscopes Attaining both Reliability and Operating Simplicity

Three New Models in DSX Series Digital Microscopes

Supporting more efficient and accurate observation and measurement through basic performance improvements including in guaranteed measurement accuracy

Olympus Corporation (President: Hiroyuki Sasa) today announced the international launch by its Scientific Solutions Business of three new models in its DSX Series of digital microscopes, the DSX510, DSX510i, and DSX110, with capabilities that extend from highly accurate observation and measurement with simple operation through to report generation.

Industrial microscopes are used to make observations and measurements of a wide variety of samples such as electronic components and metallic materials. The DSX Series of digital microscopes attain the high reliability of optical technology built up by Olympus over many years with the simple and intuitive operability made possible by digital technology. First released as a new series of industrial microscopes in 2012, they have since acquired a strong reputation. They enable users to perform a workflow from placing a sample on the stage and then making observations and measurements, to generating reports without the need for profound knowledge or complex operations.

In the first model change in three years, the three new models build on the existing functions and deliver further enhancements to the reliability and ease-of-use that are key features of the series. This helps achieve more efficient and accurate observation and measurement.

Main Features
  1. Advanced automatic stitching function helps achieve more efficient and accurate observation (all three models).
  2. Faster extended focal imaging and 3D imaging functions (all three models).
  3. Improved measurement performance with the addition of guaranteed accuracy for height measurements (DSX510 only) and of a roughness measurement function (all three models).
Development Background

The demand for miniaturization and precision in products such as mobile phones and vehicles has increased the need for the efficient and accurate observation and measurement of a diverse range of samples in recent years. As a result, the market for microscopic inspection is growing steadily. Users in fields such as development and quality management require reliable instruments with versatile, easy-to-use functions.

While optical microscopes can provide high-resolution observations thanks to their excellent optical performance, they require knowledge and experience to operate. The advantage of digital microscopes, on the other hand, is that the integration of observation and imaging makes them easy to use. Olympus released the DSX Series of digital microscopes in 2012 by integrating the latest digital technology with optical technology that Olympus built up over many years, satisfying diverse user needs by combining the advantages of both types of microscope.

In the first model change in three years, Olympus is helping achieve more efficient and accurate observation and measurement by releasing the new DSX510, DSX510i, and DSX110 models with enhanced basic performance.

Details of Main Features 1. Advanced automatic stitching function helps achieve more efficient and accurate observation (all three models)

The automatic image stitching function works by specifying the number of images or the region on images in order to capture large (wide-angle) observation images. The function has been upgraded to stitch the high-definition images more smoothly. The maximum number of images that can be stitched has also been increased to 1,000 (ten times previous models) to enable even larger images. The function is useful for improving the productivity of inspection applications that cover a wide area such as the visual inspection of PCB assembly.

2. Faster extended focal imaging and 3D imaging functions (all three models)

The extended focal imaging and 3D imaging functions work by automatically combining multiple images taken while shifting the focal point in the Z (height) direction along the height contours of the sample. The new models feature improvements to the algorithm that speed up image capture and make observation more comfortable. 2D images with the entire sample area in focus (extended focal imaging) and 3D images that enable the sample to be viewed from any angle can be generated with a single click, even for samples with large variations in height.

3. Improved measurement performance with the addition of guaranteed accuracy for height measurements (DSX510 only) and of a roughness measurement function (all three models)

Olympus uses two figures for its measurement accuracy guarantee: an "accuracy" figure representing measurement accuracy itself, and a "repeatability" figure that indicates the low level of variation over multiple measurements. This double guarantee provides measurements with a high level of confidence. Now, in addition to the existing double guarantee for the planar dimensions (X and Y), the new DSX510 also comes with a repeatability guarantee for the height dimension (Z) to enable its use with even greater confidence. All three models also feature a new roughness measurement function. This provides a simple way to check the surface roughness of samples, such as the degree of gloss finish on the surfaces of machined parts.
