OmniVision Introduces 5-Megapixel OS05A Image Sensor with High Dynamic Range for High-Resolution Commercial and Consumer Video Applications

OS05A Leverages PureCel®Pixel Technology to Bring Wide Field-of-View and Low-Light Sensitivity to Security and 360-Degree Full-View Cameras

SANTA CLARA, Calif., - January 5, 2017 - OmniVision Technologies, Inc., a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today announced the OS05A image sensor for commercial and consumer surveillance applications. Built on OmniVision's advanced PureCel® pixel technology, the OS05A features advanced backside illumination (BSI) for enhanced low-light performance, very low power consumption and a double-exposure staggered mode for high dynamic range (HDR) rendering.

OmniVision's OS05A enables video applications in widely used 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios for 24/7 high definition (HD) critical scene capture in both digital and analog formats. The OS05A also features extended platform support for higher resolutions in consumer applications. In addition, consumers increasingly use tablets, smartphones and virtual reality (VR) headsets to watch 360-degree videos and to post live video feeds on social media. With a host of advanced features, the OS05A is well-suited for capturing a wide range of immersive videos in consumer applications.

"The low-power OS05A uses OmniVision's latest PureCel pixel technology to bring improved low-light performance to mainstream surveillance applications. In addition, the OS05A's double-exposure staggered HDR capability adds new versatility to scene reproduction, even in difficult, high-contrast lighting conditions," said Chris Yiu, senior marketing manager at OmniVision. "We expect to see use of the OS05A in many areas, from consumer to highly professional and industrial applications."

Key features of the OS05A include:

  • Popular 1/2.7-inch optical format

  • HDR feature to support critical scene capture

  • Large pixel size for improved low-light sensitivity in color mode

  • Low power consumption

The OS05A image sensor features OmniVision's PureCel technology, achieving lower noise, low blooming, better low-light sensitivity, and higher full-well capacity.

    Product Specifications

    The OS05A's technical specifications include:

  • 1080p full HD, slow-motion video capture at 120 frames per second (FPS)

  • 2688 x 1944 resolution at 60 FPS

  • 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios

  • 12-degree chief ray angle (CRA)

  • MIPI and LVDS interface

  • Chip scale package (CSP)

The OS05A is currently available for sampling, and is expected to enter volume production in the second quarter of 2017.
