Unwired Planet, formerly Openwave Systems Inc., (NASDAQ:OPWV) today announced it has obtained a new ticker symbol from NASDAQ, and, effective May 9, the stock will begin trading under the symbol UPIP.

"Unwired Planet is executing a multi-pronged IP strategy that includes licensing and, if necessary, enforcement to protect our patent portfolio."

Unwired Planet's patent portfolio is comprised of approximately 200 issued US and foreign patents, and approximately 75 pending applications, many of which are considered foundational to mobile communications. Earlier this month the company completed the sale of its product businesses to Marlin Equity Partners and changed its name from Openwave Systems Inc. to Unwired Planet.
