OpSec Security Group, the global leader in anti-counterfeiting and brand protection, today announced it has renamed its ISIS optical security platform to Equinox. The change is in response to ongoing western media coverage, utilizing the name in association with the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.

Equinox, OpSec’s flagship OVD (Optically Variable Device) technology, currently protects millions of global ID documents, banknotes, and high value brands from counterfeiting and has recently gained further industry recognition for its latest technical innovation.

Unlike holograms, Equinox technology is based upon the ability to control reflective light with such control that color can be completely removed from the security feature. This control provides a range of overt greyscale optical effects such as 90° black to white color switches and kinetic ‘zooming’ effects.

With the introduction of 3D Equinox, OpSec has taken this achromatic technology further than ever before, enabling 2D/3D images to be seen in a clear and contrasting black and white state. 3D Equinox can be seamlessly integrated with all other security features offered by OpSec, enabling security at overt, covert and forensic levels to be increased considerably.

“Sales of counterfeit products have been well linked to the funding of terrorist activities,” said Richard Cremona, CEO of OpSec Security, “therefore it became clear, as we further developed this popular anti-counterfeiting security technology, that we needed to rebrand and disassociate it from the brutal acts of the ISIS militant group.”

“The introduction of 3D Equinox provides an attractive feature that is very simple for enforcement officers or members of the public to understand and verify, but that is exceptionally difficult for counterfeiters to replicate or emulate,” said Ben Stump, Chief Technology Officer of OpSec Security.

3D Equinox has been commended by the IHMA (International Hologram Manufacturers Association) in the ‘Innovation in Holographic Technology’ annual awards category, the winner of which will be announced at The Holography Conference taking place in Istanbul this week.
