Orange placed first or tied for first in 84 of the 87 criteria for voice/SMS, in 92 of the 106 criteria for mobile internet, and in 23 of the 25 criteria for transport, ranking it the first or tied for first overall in 176 of the 193 criteria measured.

The Orange mobile network was in pole position in key criteria for our customers:

  • No. 1 for call quality, with 94.3% perfect calls in all residential areas combined
  • No. 1 for average file downloading speed overall, in particular with 45.5 Mbit/second in dense areas
  • No. 1 for mobile web navigation overall in transports

An investment strategy bears fruit

These results confirm the pertinence of Orange's network investments. As part of its Essentiels2020 plan, Orange is in fact devoting 17 billion euros over the 2015-2018 period, more than half of it in Metropolitan France. In 2016, Orange invested a total of more than 3.4 billion euros.

Thanks to this strategy, Orange now covers 99% of the population with 3G+ and more than 90% with 4G in Metropolitan France today, and 93% by the end of the year.

In addition, Orange notes that 4G+ of up to 223 Mbit/second is available in many cities, listed on reseaux.orange.fr, including Aix-en-Provence, Douai, Grenoble, Lens, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Nice, Rouen, Saint-Etienne and Toulon. Seven cities (Paris, Avignon, Palaiseau, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Lille and Strasbourg) have maximum theoretical peak speeds of up to 300 Mbit/second.

Outside places of work or residences, deployment of the mobile network continued as well, to support customers in the places that matter to them:

  • 24 motorways covered with 3G+, including 5 with 4G
  • More than 400 seaside resorts and 95 mountain resorts covered with 4G
  • A large number of tourist sites and summer events connected to 4G

Orange is investing its own funds to improve coverage in trams, regional trains and high-speed trains:

  • 5 high-speed lines are now covered with 4G, including 3 new lines. Starting July 13, Orange will be the first operator in France to cover the TGV lines between Paris and Bordeaux, Paris-Le Mans-Rennes, and Paris-Lille with continuous 4G (excluding tunnels)
  • The Eurostar also has 4G from Orange in the Paris to London direction, up to the Chunnel exit.
  • Daily transport:
    - Ile-de-France suburban trains (RER): 4G is now available on the platforms of some train stations of the RER A and RER C lines. On the RER A line, Orange customers have 4G coverage on the station platforms of Nanterre Préfecture, La Défense, Charles de Gaulle-Etoile, Auber, Châtelet and Gare de Lyon. On the RER C line, the entire section between the Champs de Mars and Paris Austerliz is covered (platforms and tunnels).
    - 4G coverage of the remaining metro and suburban lines of the RATP is now undergoing deployment.
    - Regional trains (TER): 4G coverage from Orange is available on two TER lines: Lyon-Villefranche-sur-Saône and Lyon-Ambérieu (excluding tunnels).
    - Tram: Continuous 4G coverage from Orange in the Lille-Tourcoing and Lille-Roubaix tram lines.

Orange is also pursuing efforts for mobile coverage of rural areas

Arcep once again ranked Orange 1st or tied for 1st this year in rural areas for voice/sms, outside urban areas of more than 10,000 inhabitants.

This shows Orange's interest in the digital development of these rural areas, and more particularly for towns of fewer than 5,000 inhabitants, where it is also very active via its programme 'Orange Territoires Connectés'.
With this programme, launched a year ago, Orange has improved or added 4G coverage for 8,000 towns in this area. As a result, 6 million additional inhabitants - 1 million more than the objective set in 2016 - now have 4G coverage in France, thanks to Orange. Orange provides 4G coverage for 72% of the population in these areas.

Thanks to these efforts, Orange was able to meet its coverage obligations for the priority deployment area specified in the 4G license, three years ahead of schedule.

All of the data are available on the reseaux.orange.fr website, and the complete survey is available on the Arcep website: www.arcep.fr
