CloudBees Inc., the Enterprise Jenkins Company and continuous delivery leader, today announced that Orbitz Worldwide (NYSE: OWW), a global online travel company, is using advanced technology to support its goal of transforming the way consumers plan and purchase travel. Orbitz has adopted continuous delivery practices and is using the CloudBees Jenkins Platform as the foundation for its software delivery process automation, enabling Orbitz to lead in a highly crowded online travel industry.

Orbitz employs hundreds of developers around the world that develop and maintain the nearly 200 applications that support its global line of businesses. These applications power hundreds of websites that serve Orbitz customers and business partners, including its flagship consumer brand Orbitz.com, CheapTickets, ebookers, HotelClub and corporate travel solution Orbitz For Business, as well as some of the largest airlines, bank loyalty and travel agencies in the world.

Prior to adopting a continuous delivery methodology, the time to provide feedback to the business on new software features was about 18 days. When business needs required new functionality more quickly, the Orbitz teams would frequently request patches to production, a practice that was often inefficient and needed to be improved.

Orbitz adopted continuous delivery to accelerate the software delivery process and make it more efficient. In implementing continuous delivery, Orbitz has automated testing, ensured reliable builds and increased build consistency across the organization.

“By making our process more efficient and adopting continuous delivery practices with the CloudBees Jenkins Platform, we have cut our release times in half, and then cut them in half again,” said Jacob Tomaw, principal engineer at Orbitz. “Additionally, thanks to our automation we now ensure that each one of the artifacts we build for production applications is produced consistently and in a repeatable way — a capability that is essential for continuous delivery.”

As part of the move to continuous delivery, Orbitz added the CloudBees Jenkins Platform to its IT environment to provide a common place for continuous integration and the release of software to production, which was vital to shortening delivery cycles. In 2014, Orbitz released tens of thousands of updates and features at a record twice per week, shortening the overall time to market for any one change. In 2015, the goal is to release hundreds of thousands of updates and features. Between all of the Orbitz applications, new functionality is deployed every day, even multiple times per day.

Since implementing continuous delivery practices, Orbitz has cut release cycle times by 75 percent. The software delivery teams have streamlined and automated testing, made builds more consistent and standardized multiple development tools teams on the same platform. Orbitz has also been able to implement multivariate testing to improve overall user experience and now can push test results to production in a matter of days, not weeks.

“The progress that Orbitz has been able to achieve is impressive,” said Sacha Labourey, CEO of CloudBees. “Orbitz operates in a crowded landscape, where their business is their online applications. They are demonstrating that adoption of continuous delivery practices provides a competitive edge. In an industry that focuses on enhancing the user experience, we are proud that the CloudBees Jenkins Platform supports continuous delivery processes at Orbitz and plays a key role in their success.”
