Orica at Investing in African Mining Indaba 2015 12 Feb 2015

Orica is proud to be a Premier Sponsor of the Investing in African Mining Indaba conference taking place 9-12 February 2015 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Investing in African Mining Indaba is the world's largest mining investment conference, the world's third largest mining conference, and Africa's largest mining event. The conference brings together the key players and the most influential stakeholders in African mining including financiers, investors, mining professionals and government officials.

Day 3 Highlights

Orica's Chief Mining Engineer, Stephen Boyce, today presented within the 'Mining Thought Leadership' stream of the 2015 Mining Indaba in Cape Town, South Africa. His presentation 'Outcome Focused Blasting' examined the key issues facing mining companies in 2015, including the electrical energy shortage that challenges many African nations.

Mr Boyce focused on the 'Ultra High Intensity Blasting' (UHIB) technique which was awarded the 2014 CEEC Medal. The combination of this new blasting technique, along with higher energy bulk explosives and electronic timing is helping Orica customers in hard rock mines to improve mill productivity, reduce total cost of mining and reduce specific energy consumption.

Orica's Ground Support Business Lead in Africa, Donald O'Connor, joined a panel discussion about Skills Development in sub-Saharan Africa in Cape Town yesterday. The panel focused on the promotion of employment opportunities for locals in African mining projects, sharing Australian work practices and enabling skills transfer to African nationals.

Orica is a good case study of local skills development, with the ASX listed company employing 700 people in the region, just two of whom are Australian. In his talk, Mr O'Connor highlighted the importance of formal development of defined workplace competencies, the transfer of engineering standards and structured methods, and informal transfer of attitudes and culture through programs such as mentoring and immersion in established best practice. The session was hosted by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Austrade and SkillsDMC at the Mining Indaba 2015, Cape Town in South Africa.

Day 2 Highlights

Orica hosted a breakfast in Cape Town for customers, partners and Australian diplomats and trade representatives as part of Mining Indaba. Daryl Impey, South African national cycling champion and member of the ORICA-GreenEDGE (OGE) pro cycling team, spoke with guests about technology and teamwork in pro cycling. Daryl wore the yellow jersey in the 2013 Tour de France and continues to perform strongly for the ORICA-GreenEDGE team.
