Owens Corning (NYSE: OC) has been recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) with a 2016 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year - Energy Management Award. The award highlights the company's outstanding efforts to improve the energy efficiency of its domestic facilities.

Owens Corning, an ENERGY STAR partner since 2004, will be honored for:

  • Reducing energy intensity by more than 3 percent per year for the past five years
  • Completing 77 energy projects for big savings in 2015, along with reducing energy use by 51,000 megawatt hours and the associated carbon emissions by 25,000 tons
  • Expanding its use of clean power through three renewable energy projects, including a 2.4 megawatt solar canopy and two wind power supply agreements for new installed capacity
  • Allotting and sustaining a capital funding pool dedicated to energy projects
  • Building an energy team for the organization with energy leaders at manufacturing facilities and several Certified Energy Managers (by the Association of Energy Engineers)
  • Implementing a system to share best energy management practices across the company

'Owens Corning continues to strive to be a net positive company, one where the positive impact of our people and our products - or our handprint - is larger than the footprint associated with our manufacturing operations,' said Frank O'Brien-Bernini, vice president and chief sustainability officer at the company. 'Energy efficiency is critically important to reducing our footprint. And our partnership with ENERGY STAR has, in turn, helped us make big improvements in this area.

'Just when we think we're nearing the end of the list of energy-saving ideas, our employees engage and we sustain the progress. At Owens Corning, we like to say 'our people and products make the world a better place.' Energy is a great example of putting that purpose into practice. We're honored with the EPA award.'

Since its inception in 1992, ENERGY STAR and its partners have helped prevent a total of more than 2.4 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

'Owens Corning demonstrates how businesses and organizations can successfully incorporate ENERGY STAR into their corporate strategies to improve building and plant energy performance,' said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. 'The role of Owens Corning in energy management is helping reduce our nation's greenhouse gas emissions that drive climate change and preserve a healthy planet for future generations.'

ENERGY STAR has 16,000 partners working to protect the environment through greater energy efficiency, including manufacturers, retailers, public schools, hospitals, real estate companies, and home builders.
