Birtley, County Durham, UK. 10. May 2018- Parker Hannifin - the world's leading diversified manufacturer of motion and control technologies and systems - has announced a major investment in its Parker Bioscience division.

Parker Bioscience's site in Birtley, UK, will have its extensive existing capabilities enhanced by a multi-million dollar phased investment programme throughout the remainder of 2018. The overall investment will see an expansion of Parker Bioscience's laboratory, clean room, office and warehouse facilities, and will make the division's Birtley premises one of the most modern manufacturing sites for integrated bioprocessing solutions in EMEA.

Parker Bioscience designs, supplies and delivers whole systems for both upstream and downstream pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing. The division, which has sites in Birtley and Oxnard, California, supports its customers in improving process control, efficiency and security throughout their production and packaging processes, and provides integrated bioprocessing solutions that speed up development times, increase efficiency and safety, and enable reproducible quality. Incorporating SciLog® and domnick hunter, Parker Bioscience combines filtration, single-use fluid-handling systems and sensors into automated single-use solutions.

The new investment follows a period of significant growth in the manufacturing capabilities of the Birtley site. In 2017, it was announced that the facility would start the manufacture of the company's automated bioprocessing systems, complementing existing production at its site in California, while 2016 saw the introduction of a new ISO Class 7 clean room at the facility, from which Parker Bioscience is now producing single-use manifolds incorporating tubing, bioprocess containers, filters, sensors and other components for use in the bioprocessing industry.

The move to further strengthen the facilities of the Birtley site reinforces the division's robust overall manufacturing capacity. The increased investment will enable Parker Bioscience to service its European biopharmaceutical markets more effectively - for instance by shortening the supply chain and making it easier for biopharmaceutical manufacturers to access automated systems and manifolds, and to receive close specialist technical support.

Mike Brailsford, General Manager at Parker Bioscience, said: 'This investment demonstrates the strength of Parker Bioscience's commitment to its European client base and we are looking forward to witnessing the further development of the Birtley site over the year. The increased capacity will help us to offer larger scale services to biopharmaceutical manufacturers in Europe and across the globe, and is a major milestone in the division's growth.'

In addition to providing solutions to the biopharmaceutical manufacturing sector, Parker Bioscience - previously known as Parker domnick hunter - provides filtration solutions for the global food and beverage industry. It has specialist expertise in the brewing, bottled water, wine and dairy industries, and supports companies in improving process control, efficiency and security throughout their production and packaging processes.
