JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Dec. 18, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ParkerVision, Inc. (Nasdaq:PRKR), a developer and marketer of semiconductor technology solutions for wireless applications, today announced that the Patent Trial and Appeal Board ("PTAB") of the United States Patent and Trademark Office ("USPTO") denied institution of trial for inter partes review ("IPR") of one claim contained in three ParkerVision patents and granted trial for 14 claims contained in those same three patents. The three IPR petitions were filed in June 2014 by RPX Corporation and Michael Farmwald against an aggregate of 15 patent claims of ParkerVision patents 6,601,551, 6,266,518 and 6,370,371. Ten claims from these same patents, including the one claim that was not instituted for inter partes review trial, are the subject of ParkerVision's pending appeal at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ("Federal Circuit") in its patent infringement case against Qualcomm, Incorporated. The PTAB is expected to issue in early January 2015 a trial institution decision on a fourth IPR petition filed by the same parties against ParkerVision U.S. patent 7,496,342.

According to the scheduling order, ParkerVision is given to March 5, 2015 to file a response to the PTAB, which may include amendment of claims for the three patents. Following ParkerVision's response, petitioners are given to May 22, 2015 to file their response and opposition to any claim amendments. A final written decision on patentability will be rendered by the PTAB on or before December 18, 2015.

Jeffrey Parker, Chairman and CEO, commented, "We are disappointed in the PTAB's decision to institute IPR trials on any claims of these patents, particularly those for which the district court has already found not invalid. However, we are pleased that one of the claims in our ongoing patent infringement case against Qualcomm was excluded from the IPR process as we believe Qualcomm will be prevented from delaying the Federal Circuit appeal due to the IPR trials. These patents cover fundamental innovations in radio frequency down-conversion technology and we intend to vigorously defend our patent rights and ultimately believe this process will only serve to strengthen our patent claims."
