Beyond being some of America's largest employers, companies making this year's list represented established brands, strong company cultures and market disrupters.

Patterson Companies joins other Minnesota-based companies on the list, including 3M, Medtronic, Ecolab, UnitedHealthcare and others. The company also joins other employee stock ownership plan (ESOP) organizations on the list, including Publix and WinCo Foods.
The list features 500 employers that were chosen based on the results of an independent, anonymous survey conducted among 30,000 American employees working at companies and institutions with 5,000 or more employees.
