London, 2 March 2015: PayByPhone and the City of London Corporation have reached a major milestone with the 100,000th customer in the Square Mile signing up to use the mobile phone cashless parking solution.

Drivers paying to park using PayByPhone now account for over three-quarters of the total number of parking transactions in the Square Mile - with an increasing number of those customers using the PayByPhone app or mobile web.

This follows the general trend in the capital, with consumers using mobile applications and the mobile web as their payment method of choice.

PayByPhone was first introduced in the City of London as a convenient way for parking customers to pay for their parking.

The City Corporation is now among 11 London boroughs to offer the service, including neighbours Islington, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Southwark and Lambeth.

Kay English, Traffic Manager from the City of London Corporation, said:

"We are very happy to have reached this 100,000 customer milestone. PayByPhone continues to be an efficient and convenient service to motorists parking in The City."

City of London Corporation encourages drivers to use PayByPhone through regular promotions. In 2013, when drivers were offered a discount of up to one hour's free parking when using PayByPhone in the area for the first time, this method of payment went up by over 30%.

As a result of PayByPhone's popularity and absence of chip and pin facilities, the City of London Corporation is now planning to remove the card payment option at the majority of its Pay & Display machines.

From April 2015, PayByPhone will be the sole payment method for parking if customers want to use a debit or credit card in most locations in The City.

About the City of London Corporation
The City of London Corporation has three roles: we support London's communities by working in partnership with neighbouring boroughs on economic regeneration and skills projects. The City of London Corporation's charity, the City Bridge Trust, makes grants of more than £15 million annually to charitable projects across London and we also support education - with three independent schools and three City Academies - plus a primary school and the world-renowned Guildhall School of Music and Drama. We also help look after key London heritage and green spaces including Tower Bridge, Museum of London, Barbican Arts Centre, City gardens, Hampstead Heath, Epping Forest, Burnham Beeches, and important 'commons' in south London. And - with its heart in London's Square Mile - we also support and promote the 'City' as a world-leading financial and business hub, with outward and inward business delegations, high-profile civic events, research-driven policies and a long-term approach. See www.cityoflondon.gov.uk for much more on our uniquely diverse role, including the City of London Police, etc.
