HAIFA, Israel, June 11, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Rambam Health Care Campus ("Rambam") was pleased to present George Feldenkreis, Chairman and CEO of Perry Ellis International, and his wife Mariita Feldenkreis with the 2015 Rambam Award. Mr. and Mrs. Feldenkreis were honored along with Mr. Shimon Peres, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, Mr. Eyal Ofer and Professor Mary-Claire King, all highly deserving recipients at the annual Rambam Summit in Haifa on June 9.

The Rambam Summit brings together some of the most influential members of the international scientific community to share their insights into the fields of medical research, public health, and the impact of technology on the future of medicine. The Rambam Award was established in 2010 in order to recognize achievements of remarkable individuals for their contributions in medicine, science, technology, leadership, and humanity, and for their passion, caring, and special generosity to the State of Israel.

Professor Yehuda Hayuth, Chairman of Friends of Rambam, said, "We are proud to honor George and Mariita Feldenkreis with this award in recognition of their exceptional achievements in business and lifelong dedication to community building and philanthropy in the State of Israel. Since fleeing Cuba for Miami as a young Jewish businessman in 1961, George Feldenkreis, and his wife Mariita, have demonstrated exceptional generosity and an unwavering commitment not only to their local South Florida community, but also to the broader Jewish community. We greatly appreciate their support for all that Rambam does to advance the development of medical practice, research and education in Israel."

The Feldenkreis family is known in its community as well as the State of Israel for their continuous support for education, human services, and Jewish community life, and Mr. Feldenkreis has been honored with numerous awards for his humanitarian contributions. He received the Lincoln-Marti award for his valuable assistance to the Cuban Refugee program and for "extraordinary performance of civic duty"; the David Ben Gurion Award from the Cuban Hebrew Bond Committee; the prestigious Ernst & Young "Entrepreneur of the Year Award" in 1998; the National Conference for Community and Justice's Silver Medallion for "Service to Humanity"; and the Milton Margolis Award for his humanitarian contributions, among many others. He was inducted into the South Florida Business Hall of Fame in 2005.
