PITTSBURGH, Oct. 31, 2014 - PPG Industries' (NYSE:PPG) coil and building products group received three 2014 Chairman's Awards from the Metal Construction Association (MCA) at METALCON 2014, the only annual conference dedicated to metal construction products, technologies and solutions.

The North Scottsdale Park and Ride was selected in the metal roofing category. PPG supplied DURANAR® VARI-COOL® infrared (IR)-reflective metal roof coatings for the structure, which is located on a 6-acre site near the Scottsdale, Arizona, airport and provides 275 shaded parking spaces for commuters. The architectural highlight of the complex, designed by DWL Architects + Planners, Phoenix, is a 12,000-square-foot wing-like canopy that floats over the passenger platform and protects visitors from sunlight and weather. The wing-shaped metal canopy was fabricated by Metal Works Custom Fabrication, Phoenix, with metal panels supplied by Steelscape, Kalam, Washington.

The addition to and renovation of Chaffin Junior High School in Fort Smith, Arkansas, featuring "Hartford Green" Duranar coatings, was selected in the education-primary and secondary category. Originally constructed in 1969, the school is newly highlighted by colorful metal building panels, interlaced with a custom aluminum tube "baguette" system, that are designed to complement the building's existing brick facade. The metal panels were manufactured by Citadel Architectural Products, Inc., Indianapolis, and installed by Architectural Glass and Metals of Fort Smith. Architecture Plus, Inc., of Fort Smith was the architect.

PPG also supplied coatings to the new Arts and Science building at Valparaiso University, which earned honorable mention for creative detailing. Duranar coatings were applied to a 1/2-inch plate screenwall and light screen custom-cut to incorporate the school's motto, "In Thy Light, We See Light," along with the word "light" in 43 different languages. Duranar coatings were used to finish the building's custom sunshades, screenwall support framing and entrance canopy. D. Architectural Metal Solutions, Alsip, Illinois, was the metal fabricator and McShane Construction Company, Chicago, was the metal installer and general contractor. The architect was EHDD, San Francisco.

The Chairman's Awards are an annual designation given to outstanding projects involving members of the MCA. Recipients of the awards, which honor innovation and creativity in exceptional metal building design, are selected by a panel of independent architects and presented in eight categories, including municipal, primary and secondary education, colleges and universities, institutional, commercial/industrial, roofing, residential and overall excellence.

METALCON 2014 was held Oct. 1-3 at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver.
