PPL : Volunteers distribute thousands of filled backpacks, school supplies on August 1

(LOUISVILLE, Ky.) - For the 11th straight year, more than 160 employee volunteers and family members are joining together for the single largest volunteerism event, called Day of Caring, held each year by Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company.

Volunteers will be coordinating school supply drives, filling more than 16,000 backpacks with necessary supplies and hosting backpack distribution events to benefit students in more than 20 cities across Kentucky and into Virginia.

Day of Caring is part of the LG&E and KU annual employee giving campaign called Power of One, which brings together monetary giving and volunteer work.

"We at LG&E and KU have a legacy of giving back to the community," said David Sinclair, vice president of Energy Supply and Analysis for LG&E and KU and co-chair of the 2015 Power of One campaign. "Today's students are our communities' future leaders, and combining our annual Day of Caring event with our area school supply drives enhances our ability to help these students start the school year on the right foot."

As part of this year's Day of Caring events, employees are holding collection drives at many of the utilities' facilities for various school supply items that will then be distributed to area schools to benefit students in Barlow, Campbellsville, Carrollton, Danville, Earlington, Eddyville, Elizabethtown, Georgetown, Greenville, Harlan, London, Maysville, Middlesboro, Morehead, Morganfield, Mt. Sterling, Paris, Pennington Gap, Richmond, Shelbyville, Somerset, Versailles, Winchester and Norton, Va.

Since 2005, 2,800 employees and family members have put in more than 11,200 man-hours at more than 90 locations across the state through Power of One.

The utilities' Power of One also has raised nearly $16 million since then to support hundreds of nonprofit organizations throughout the LG&E and KU service territories.

Nearly 70 percent of LG&E and KU employees participate in Power of One through payroll deduction - a participation rate more than twice the national average.
