Charlotte Business Journal: Healthcare is no longer just about bricks and mortar. Charlotte's healthcare systems are investing in technology, physician networks and care-delivery alternatives to hospitals such as express clinics and telemedicine. They're also focused on initiatives to improve population health. "That's driving a lot of change to how capital is deployed," says Michael Alkire, chief operating officer of Premier Inc. The Charlotte healthcare alliance's most recent quarterly survey of its membership found 69% of respondents reported flat or increasing capital budgets from a year ago. The biggest expenses are in technology infrastructure, with nearly half saying it's the largest area of capital outlays.
