Members of the Premier alliance stand ready to support and implement recommendations from the President's National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria.

Treating infections can be exceedingly complex and, for many reasons, clinicians sometimes use multiple antibiotics to treat the same infection. This practice can contribute to antimicrobial resistance, put patient safety at risk and increase costs. In fact, according to our own, independent research conducted with the Centers for Disease Control, we found that 78 percent of hospitals used unnecessary and duplicative antibiotics, which directly led to an estimated $163 million in excess costs.

We know that antimicrobial stewardship programs and electronic surveillance of antibiotic use are two of the best strategies we have to help prevent overuse of antibiotics. We hope this coordinated national effort will help to enhance the antimicrobial stewardship initiatives that the majority of U.S. hospitals already have in place today.
