PROMISE Technology's VTrak Storage Subsystems Help CERN Face its Storage Challenges

3/4/2013

New Case Study Published by PROMISE Technology Details How VTrak Delivers the Flexibility and Reliability to Meet the Storage Challenges Facing CERN

HSINCHU, Taiwan/SON, Netherlands - March 5, 2013 - PROMISE Technology, Inc., creator of tailor made storage solutions to meet the specific requirements in a vertical market, announces the availability of a new case study outlining the deployment of over 200 PROMISE VTrak storage subsystems (as of 2012) at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research. CERN is one of the largest and most respected scientific research centers in the world and is home to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's largest and highest energy particle accelerator that is used to study fundamental forms of energy and matter to further increase human knowledge of the universe.

To help tackle the challenge of providing storage capacity for the tremendous amount of data generated annually by the fascinating research at CERN, including 25 Petabytes each year from the LHC, CERN IT requires storage solutions that are flexible, reliable, and minimize the complexity of hardware deployment and operation. Additionally, power efficiency is a critical component as CERN IT must match the growing demand for more disk capacity with the electric power and cooling available for the equipment. PROMISE Technology was able to fulfill the requirements of both CERN and their suppliers with the Promise VTrak J830s.

"During a significant two-year deployment ramp-up, the flexibility and reliability provided by the PROMISE VTrak J830s units met our expectations," said Olof Bärring, Technical Responsible for Procurement of Servers and Storage, IT Department, at CERN. "We are able to use them both for our bulk storage as well as in high availability configurations for critical services."

"PROMISE is thrilled to release this success story regarding the VTrak deployment at CERN," said John van den Elzen, Managing Director of PROMISE Technology EMEA. "CERN has an outstanding tradition of excellence and we are very excited that our VTrak solution is a part of the storage infrastructure that helps facilitate some of the most incredible research in the world. We are proud that we are able to work together with the value add partners who are standing close to CERN and help us to develop the most outstanding storage solutions."
