'One of the greatest challenges of our time is retirement security' When women surveyed in Prudential's study "Financial Experience & Behaviors Among Women" were asked to rank their knowledge about generating an income stream in retirement, they generally assigned themselves a grade of "C" or lower.

"One of the greatest challenges of our time is retirement security, which is why creating a retirement plan with guaranteed income options that can produce a steady stream of income lasting through retirement is important," says Christine Marcks, president of Prudential Retirement. "This study demonstrates that women are cognizant of where they stand regarding their retirement readiness. Now it's up to financial services companies to help educate them on how to prepare."

Marcks also points out that Americans are living much longer than previous generations, and that women generally have longer life expectancies than men. "Because of increased longevity, women may find that calculating exactly how much they need to save for retirement can be challenging," Marcks says.

The study results, released July 15, also revealed that contrary to popular belief, women and men often exhibit similar amounts of comfort and discomfort with their ability to make wise financial decisions. For example, 80 percent of women and 76 percent of men feel unprepared to make financial decisions.
