PTTEP and HITZ Joint Research and Development in CO2 Conversion to Methane - Renewable Energy Storage for Climate Change Mitigation
03 Mar 14

Mr. Asdakorn Limpiti, Acting Executive Vice President, Technology and Sustainability Development Group of PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited or PTTEP announces that PTTEP and its partners; Hitachi Zosen Corporation (HITZ) and Daiki Ataka Engineering Co., Ltd (DAE) (subsidiary of HITZ) have preliminary success in the Joint Research and Development in Carbondioxide (CO2) Conversion to Methane (CH4) Technology. The produced methane or recycled Carbondioxide is a form of renewable energy storage that also supports the climate change mitigation.

Under the cooperation agreement signed in January, 2012, the 21-month research and development project, based on reaction between carbondioxide (CO2) and Hydrogen (H2) to become methane (CH4), achieved the goal of catalyst binding agent selection, reaction characteristics study and conceptual design of the methanation reactor of capacity 1,000 Nm3/Hr CH4 production or approximately 0.9 MMscfD CH4.

The high-performance catalyst gives exceptional results with 99% H2 conversion rate in a single tubular reactor of length less than 5 meters- operating at 200 degC. The world-class performance indicated by low temperature reaction and very high capacity (i.e. working at space velocity over 5,000 hr-1), is achieved with catalyst that does not contain any rare earth elements. Therefore, the catalyst can offer low operating cost for the process.

This Phase I-Joint Research and Development success has proved of effective collaboration between the three organizations and prompted PTTEP, Hitachi Zosen Corporation and Daiki Ataka Engineering Co., Ltd. To pursue the Phase II aimed at pilot unit development in the next 3 years.

As the reaction requires green hydrogen generated from renewable energy, PTTEP will also pursue research on the effective wind turbine concept suitable for Thailand environment.

Mr. Asdakorn added "the conversion to methane technology not only allows greenhouse gas emission reduction but also offers renewable energy storage for the country. We underscore our strong commitment through this successful research project to develop advance technology and to minimize the environmental impact as PTTEP's vision to be a leading Asian E&P company driven by technology and green practices."
