'Forest Restoration for Ecosystem Learning at Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park Project' reaches completion

PTTEP and Kasetsart University hand over restored forest for eco-learning at Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park to Royal Forest Department and Bang Kachao community

  • The restoration of the 40-rai forest for ecosystem learning under the 'nature's classroom' concept, the restoration of a bicycle trail and a wheelchair accessible trail, the provision of interpretation signboards along the two trails, outdoor exhibition and restoration of the landscape in Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park have now been completed

PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited or PTTEP led by Mr. Tevin Vongvanich, President and Chief Executive Officer; and Kasetsart University represented by Dr. Chongrak Wachrinrat, Dean of the Faculty of Forestry; jointly handed over restored forest at Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park to the Royal Forest Department represented by Mrs. Prempimol Pimpan, Deputy Director General, and the Bang Kachao community, under the Royal Initiative of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. Along with the handover ceremony, 'A Good Deed at Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park' event was organized to commemorate the 60th birthday anniversary of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's and the 30th anniversary of PTTEP. Dr. Sumet Tantivejakul, Secretary-General of the Chaipattana Foundation, presided over the opening ceremony of the event. Also in attendance were Dr. Praipol Koomsup, Assistant of Minister of Energy; and Mr.Teerakul Aiemaumpa, Samutprakan's Vice Governor as well as local people in Bang Kachao community, on 10 June, 2015 at Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park, Phrapadang district, Samutprakan.

PTTEP conducted the Forest Restoration for Ecosystem Learning at Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park Project during 2014 - 2015 with an aim to preserve the existing green space in Bang Kachao in accordance with HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's initiative to protect and restore forest areas. The project, undertaken in collaboration with Kasetsart University and the Royal Forest Department, comprises the restoration of a 40-rai forest, the restoration of two nature trails - one bicycle trail and one wheelchair accessible trail, the development of interpretation signboards along the two trails, an outdoor exhibition in ecological learning spots, as well as the restoration of overall landscape in the park. The forest restoration approach takes into account the rebuilding of strong forest structure and planting of native species suitable to the local area with an aim to create an ideal nature learning venue under the 'nature's classroom' concept, so that visitors can realize the importance of urban forest conservation and sustainable development of green space in Bang Kachao.

Mr. Tevin Vongvanich, President and Chief Executive Officer, PTTEP said that "we are honored to undertake the Forest Restoration for Ecosystem Learning at Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park Project which is essential in preserving green space in Bang Kachao under the royal initiative as well as renovating this highly valuable and beneficial public asset. The completion of the project also coincides with the commemoration of the 60th birthday anniversary of HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's and the 30th anniversary of PTTEP in 2015."
Dr. Chongrak Wachrinrat, Dean of the Faculty of Forestry, Kasetsart University added that "with the restored forest, Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park now perfectly replicates the entire ecosystem of Bang Kachao with highly diversified types of plant, animal and micro-organisms and serves as an excellent nature's classroom for ecosystem learning."
According to Mrs. Prempimol Pimpan, Deputy Director General of the Royal Forest Department, "we are grateful to PTTEP and Kasetsart University for their strong support and collaboration on this project which help revive Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park and make it even more valuable natural asset today. We believe that the park continues to be a pride of Bang Kachao community and a pleasant place for leisure activities and to learn about nature."
In the meantime, the 'A Good Deed at Sri Nakhon Khuean Khan Park' event is organized by PTTEP to mark the handover of the restored forest for eco-learning at the park as well as to engage people from the local communities at Bang Kachao, the general public and employees of PTTEP in several nature appreciation activities so that they can realize the importance of green space conservation. These activities include 'Homework from Nature's Classroom', in which participants have chance to gain knowledge from various learning spots like Nipa palm jungle, swamp forest, bird watching tower, lowland evergreen forest, etc; and 'The Path of Goodness', where participants are invited to plant trees and release fish from captivity while appreciating the beauty of nature along the two revamp nature trails. The event welcomed over 500 participants including representatives from various public and private organizations, local people of Bang Kachao, the general public and PTTEP employees.
