(May 4, 2017 - Newark, NJ) - Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) and Ben Porat Yosef Yeshiva Day School recently teamed up to complete nearly $300,000 in energy efficiency improvements at the Paramus, NJ school as part of the PSE&G Direct Install Program.
"Our Direct Install program is just one way that PSE&G is helping customers to save energy and hold the line on energy costs," said Susanna Chiu, director - energy efficiency programs, PSE&G. "We designed the program to make energy and money saving improvements affordable for customers like Ben Porat Yosef by helping to help pay for major energy efficiency improvements that likely would not otherwise be completed."
The energy efficiency improvements at Ben Porat Yosef included the installation of high efficiency lighting both inside the school and in outside entrances, parking lots and play areas. The school's air conditioning and heating systems were also upgraded with new high efficiency equipment. These improvements will save more than 140,000-kilowatt hours of electricity annually, which is equivalent to the usage of about 20 average size homes. The school will also save almost 9,000 therms of natural gas annually, which is equal to the yearly use of nine typical New Jersey homes.
PSE&G also expects that the Ben Porat Yosef will save nearly $30,000 annually in energy costs.
"This program and working with PSE&G has had an enormous, positive impact on the school," said Stacy Goldstein, Ben Porat Yosef's director of operations. "With the increased exterior lighting, our students, staff, and visitors feel so much safer as they enter and leave the building when they come for after-hours events and programs. On very cold winter days, the school boiler was so old and would break so often, we constantly had to call for repair services. And, last, but definitely not least, the new LED lights and motion sensor 'on/off' switches have offered us improved lighting in our classrooms. What is best about the program is that it has allowed the school to become more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, while saving money. This has been wonderful for Ben Porat Yosef, and we very much appreciate that PSE&G worked with us this past year to implement this wonderful program."
The Direct Install Program helps government agencies, non-profits and small businesses located in Urban Enterprise Zones reduce their energy consumption and bills by paying for 70 percent of project costs for lighting, heating and cooling systems upgrades. The program also provides on-bill financing for the balance of the cost and allows the customers to repay their portion of the funds at zero percent interest over 36 months.
