(June 8, 2017 - Newark, NJ) - In Sandy's aftermath, Public Service Electric and Gas Co. (PSE&G), with the support of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities, embarked on Energy Strong, a $1.2 billion program that is making electric and gas systems more resilient against severe weather. Three years into the work, independent monitor Pegasus Global Holdings, Inc., issued its 2016 Annual Report affirming PSE&G remains on schedule and on budget for the program.

'The work we have completed so far has put a significant portion of New Jersey's electric and gas networks out of reach of floodwaters - and, as a result, protects hundreds of thousands of customers from the impacts of another destructive storm,' said John Latka, PSE&G senior vice president of electric and gas operations.

When the program is completed in May of 2019, 430,000 of PSE&G's 2 million customers who lost power during Sandy won't lose power because of flooding, and all 2.2 million PSE&G customers would experience faster restoration times.

Since the start of the program in 2014, Pegasus Global representatives have monitored and reviewed the cost efficiency and effectiveness of PSE&G's Energy Strong work.

'The Independent Monitor's report is recognition of the excellent work of our employees and contractors,' said Latka. 'The Energy Strong work already completed or in progress has gone a long way toward building a safer, more resilient energy grid for New Jersey. We're pleased that regulators approved this important work. But there is more to be done.'

Energy Strong projects completed through May 31, 2017 include:

  • Eliminating, raising or rebuilding 12 substations that flooded during severe weather events. At the end of the three-year Energy Strong program, 26 protected substations will be in service.
  • Installing 240 miles of new, plastic gas mains in flood-prone areas. Approximately 90,000 customers served by those pipes are no longer at risk of losing gas service from floodwaters seeping into previously leak-prone mains.
  • Creating redundancy in the system and installing automated devices that allow equipment on poles to be controlled remotely. Because of these investments, 261 hospitals and other critical customers would either not lose power or would see their restoration times greatly reduced if another Sandy-like storm were to occur. Also benefiting are 400,000 customers in close proximity to critical customers where the technology has been installed.
  • Providing the capability to remotely make changes on circuits so they can be worked safely in the field, significantly improving crew productivity and restoration times.
  • Raising and hardening eight gas meter and regulating stations. When severe weather strikes, critical gas customers, including Newark Airport, the Port of Newark and electric generation facilities, would not lose service.
