REN - Redes Energéticas Nacionais presented today, 19th june, the findings of the activities carried out in the past three years by 13 researchers from REN Biodiversity Chair, who studied the impact of the electrical infrastructure on birds. The 2nd Symposium of REN's Chair had also a contribution from the North American biologist, Rick Harness, an expert in the study of the interaction between birds and electrical facilities and a discussion where multiple companies addressed the importance of the Knowledge link between academia and the companies.
This initiative, which took place at the Serralves Foundation in Porto, presented the new approaches to the management of bird life and its interaction with power lines, the optimization of the methodologies to monitor protected species, the results and trends of the metadata analysis from 15 years of monitoring bird life and the creation of applied science in the companies.
This joint work seeked to combine efforts deepening the knowledge concerning the interaction of birds with energy facilities and, in parallel, to create good practices that minimize the impacts of this interaction.
The event promoted a debate on the topic of 'REN and Academia: a Network of Knowledge' ('REN e Academia: Uma Rede de Conhecimento'), with the participations of Nuno Ferrand, from CIBIO - InBIO, Paula Guimarães, from Navigator Company, Vitor Batista, from EDP, Maria Inês Ramos, from Brisa, and Francisco Parada, from REN.
The Symposium's programme also included a practical aspect with a workshop on the Chair's main scientific results, which gave rise to around forty articles in reference scientific publications, and a guided tour of the biodiversity hall of the Living Science Centre of the museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Porto.
REN's Chair is an initiative of REN with the Foundation for Science and Technology - FCT and CIBIO-InBIO, which aims to deepen scientific knowledge in the area of biodiversity, to communicate the success stories in this area and to bring together the universities and the companies.
