Renesas Electronics, a premier provider of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced that the RX64M Group of microcontrollers (MCUs) was selected as the winner of Design News’ prestigious Golden Mousetrap Award in the Electronics & Test: Embedded Computing/Processing category.

The RX64M Group of MCUs provide a peripheral-rich, high-end MCU solution for applications that require higher performance, on-chip memory and lower power. The RX64M devices combine class-leading power efficiency and high performance with the largest flash and SRAM together to date in a 32-bit general purpose MCU – 4 MB of flash and 512 KB of SRAM.

The Design News Award Program recognizes innovation in the development of new products in automation, electronics, materials, and design tools. It celebrates the companies, products, and people who are energizing North American design, engineering, and manufacturing.

“Renesas is honored to receive the Golden Mousetrap Award for the RX64M Group of MCUs,” said Ritesh Tyagi, vice president of marketing, Renesas Electronics America. “With the expansion of the Internet of Things, there’s been tremendous growth of connected products in all areas, including the industrial, commercial and medical device markets. Our leadership in the MCU ecosystem provides unique insights into the evolving requirements associated with this growth, and the RX64M Group of MCUs supports these increasing needs for greater CPU computing performance, improved real-time response, higher memory capacities, and ever lower power.”

The RX64M Group of MCUs is the first in the flagship RX family of 32-bit MCUs to be fabricated in a 40nm process and offers system designers a path to quickly and efficiently develop high-performance, low-power industrial equipment. Based on the RXv2 CPU core, the RX64M MCUs are capable of operating up to 120 megahertz (MHZ) with zero wait state from the high-speed embedded flash memory, with power consumption as low as 133µA per MHz with all of the peripherals off. The devices provide support for all levels of industrial factory communication, from the plant level to the device level, with Dual Ethernet, USB, and a wide range of other communication functions as well as a rich array of peripherals, including motor control, audio, and camera peripherals, to complement the communications functions.

To address the increased memory capacity required by industrial applications and network equipment, the RX64M MCUs deliver up to 4 MB of the industry’s fastest embedded flash memory and up to 512 KB of SRAM. The RX64M MCUs expand and increase capacities and sales while minimizing software and hardware steps and costs. Since the new MCUs maintain compatibility with the existing product line, system designers currently working with RX products can migrate easily to these new MCUs.
