Buckinghamshire residents have helped to recycle over 28,000 litres of used cooking oil since 2009 at the county's 10 household waste recycling centres, which when converted into electricity is enough to make nearly 7 million cups of tea.
Buckinghamshire County Council teamed up with Living Fuels, a renewable energy producer, to install cooking oil containers at the recycling centres. Living Fuels recycle the collected oil into bio-liquid, which is used to generate clean electricity and heat for customers all around the UK.
Throwing used cooking oil down the sink can cause damage to drains and sewers and is a wasted resource. It can also be dangerous to wildlife if oil finds it way into lakes and ponds.
Steven Adams, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "I would like to thank residents for making use of this service. They have made a very valuable contribution to saving precious resources from going to waste. The more we use these services, the more we can do to improve our environment for future generations.
