Rio Calls On Australia Government To Fund Commuter Services -Report

Rio Tinto PLC (RIO) has told an Australian Senate inquiry into "fly-in fly-out" commuter work practices for mine workers that the government can't rely on the company to pay for all the services its workforce requires, The Australian Financial Review reported Friday.
Mark O'Neill, head of government relations at Rio, is cited as saying that governments had a responsibility to adjust to changes in demographics and to geographical changes in demand for basic services they had traditionally been responsible for delivering.
"Imposing further costs and complexities on an industry already under significant pressure could seriously impact the sector's ability to deliver the projects that are needed to underpin Australia's future prosperity," Mr. O'Neill said.
