Rio Tinto : Amrun recruitment roadshows to visit local Indigenous communities

Jobseekers in Aurukun, Mapoon, and Napranum will have the opportunity to meet representatives from Rio Tinto's Amrun project at recruitment roadshows in early May.

The roadshow will visit the three communities to share information about the project and highlight the range of roles available with the general services contract - including details on how job seekers can register interest for employment.

Rio Tinto general manager, Weipa Operations, Dan Van der Westhuizen encouraged Western Cape locals to come along to the roadshow.

'This roadshow is a great opportunity for locals to find out more about what roles are available and employment opportunities there are at Amrun. This is a great opportunity to join the project and receive on-the-job training at the same time.

'In line with our commitment to the Western Cape region, our priority is for locals to fill any suitable roles, and we would love to see people from Weipa, Napranum and our neighbouring communities participate.

'I encourage all those interested to come along and find out more' Dan said.

There will be a number of practical demonstrations and activities to participate in and lunch will be provided.

About the Amrun project

The Amrun project encompasses the engineering, procurement, and construction management (EPCM) of a range of infrastructure required to support a new bauxite mine on part of Rio Tinto's existing lease, south of the Embley River, between Weipa and Aurukun on the Western Cape York Peninsular. This includes the construction of a bauxite mine, accommodation, processing plant, dam, tailings storage facility, roads, export wharf, and ferry terminals to transport workers from Weipa to the mine. At the request of Traditional Owners, the project is known as Amrun, the Wik Waya name for the area.

Amrun is a tier one investment opportunity for Rio Tinto, with a planned initial output of 22.8 million tonnes per year and options to expand up to 50 million tonnes. The Amrun resource will replace production from Rio Tinto Weipa's East Weipa mine and increase annual bauxite exports from Cape York. The construction period is expected to take three years, with first shipment in H1 2019. The construction workforce will peak in mid-2017.
