More than 50 percent of federal IT decision makers take a day or more to detect and fix application performance issues that can cost $1 million per hour in lost productivity

San Francisco-May 19, 2015- Riverbed Technology, the leader in application performance infrastructure, today announced the results of its commissioned study of federal IT decision makers that uncovered a troubling lack of resources for addressing application performance issues. These federal leaders indicated they suffered from insufficient network and application visibility, which can lead to lost productivity and inefficiency at a time when the Federal Government relies on mission-critical applications more than ever.

Poor application performance directly impacts federal agency productivity, and the costs associated with network outages can be staggering. Research from IDC indicates that the average cost of a critical application failure for a large organization ranges from $500,000 to $1 million every hour. These performance challenges will likely grow in importance as federal agencies move to the cloud and consolidate resources as part of the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative (FDCCI). These two important trends require critical applications to travel longer distances across more complex network paths to reach the federal workers that rely upon them every day.

In the survey conducted by Market Connections, Inc., 51% of federal IT decision makers said it takes a day or more to detect and fix application performance issues. Due to a lack of insight into how their networks and applications are performing, these government leaders cannot immediately pinpoint and address problems. In fact, only 30% described their ability to monitor network performance as "excellent" and a mere 17% were able to address network outages within minutes.

"Network and application visibility is essential for maintaining application performance, and directly impacts agencies' ability to deliver citizen services," said Davis Johnson, Vice President Public Sector, Riverbed Technology. "Federal workers rely on applications to do their jobs effectively, which means latency and outages of more than a few minutes are simply unacceptable. And as agencies increasingly use cloud applications, having end-to-end application and network visibility is more critical now than ever."

Survey respondents indicated that they understood this challenge, with 68% seeing improved network reliability as a benefit to monitoring tools. The end result of a more reliable and faster network is the ability to maximize employee productivity, which 36% of respondents cited. Network visibility has federal security implications as well, with over a third of respondents indicating that a top benefit of network performance monitoring tools is a comprehensive view into network abnormalities that could indicate cyber threats.
