• First-of-its-kind for defense training
  • Leverages commercial technology to provide flexibility at a low price point
  • Integrates into LVC-enabled training solution

GEELONG, Australia (Feb. 28, 2017) - At Avalon 2017, Rockwell Collins is introducing its Coalescence™ mixed reality system to the international defense community for the first time. Available for demonstration during the show, Coalescence encapsulates the user in a virtual and augmented environment for air, land or sea missions.

Coalescence merges the trainee's real world view with a synthetic environment providing a seamlessly enhanced, mixed reality, a first in the defense training industry. This mixed reality provides trainees with immersive and engaging training scenarios for faster learning transfer and more effective training.

'Coalescence is state-of-the-art technology. Once a user chooses a scenario and applies the headset, they are able to see the simulated world and physical objects nearby such as a smartphone, a weapon and their hands,' said Jim Walker, vice president and managing director, Asia Pacific for Rockwell Collins. 'Combining each of these dynamics creates the most real training environment next to on-site, live training at a fraction of the cost.'

The solution offers low total system latency to avoid motion sickness. Rockwell Collins will focus future efforts on adding depth sensing technology, increasing the positional tracking volume, and technology refreshes to keep current with the latest commercial helmet mounted display developments.

The Coalescence system will be available this year with production anticipated in 2018.
