17.04.2014

Today, head of JSC Russian Grids Oleg Budargin and World Energy Council (WEC) Secretary General Christoph Frei attended a meeting in London to discuss a number of pressing issues regarding the partnership between Russian Grids and the WEC.

In particular, the two leaders discussed the agenda for the World Energy Leaders' Summit, which will be held in Astana (Kazakhstan) on May 21-22, 2014, as well as Christoph Frei's participation in the round table on the topic "The Integration of Global Energy Systems - Designing the Future Together", organised by Russian Grids as part of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

The meeting also focused on the human resources and youth policy undertaken by the Russian Grids Group. The parties agreed to jointly prepare for the youth round table which is traditionally held at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. This year, the round table will be expanded to include students from foreign energy universities and young specialists from various electric energy businesses around the world. The event will also introduce an international team of WEC representatives.

Another important issue was Russia's bid to host the 24th World Energy Congress 2019 in St. Petersburg. The Russian National WEC Committee prepared and forwarded a letter to the WEC Secretary General detailing the proposal for hosting the 24th World Energy Congress in Russia.

The WEC

The World Energy Council (WEC) is the largest international non-governmental energy organisation in the world. It has a long history which begins in 1923 when it was created on the initiative of businesses and energy groups from Great Britain as well as from a host of developed nations in Europe and North America. In 1924, the first founding conference took place in London and was attended by numerous representatives from countries around the globe, including Russia, who became a co-founder and an official member of the WEC. The Council presently includes 97 nations. The WEC holds a unique position in the world in being, essentially, the only global organisation to unite all aspects of the fuel and energy sector and in acting on behalf of the energy industry as an interdependent complex.
