After building a 1.4-km tunnel

Paco de Lucía station on line 9 of Madrid Metro was put into operation today. It was built by Sacyr Construcción (50%) in a joint venture with Ferrovial Agromán (50%).

A 1.4 km tunnel was constructed to expand this line and connect Mirasierra (located on calle Ventisquero de la Condesa) and Paco de Lucía stations (on calle Costa Brava).

The total investment for expanding line 9 with two more stations was 191 million euros and will directly benefit over 50,000 people who live in the Mirasierra, Montecarmelo and Arroyo del Fresno neighborhoods as well as the future passengers of lines C3, C7 and C8 of the Cercanías commuter trains which will be connected to this station.

The project is divided into two phases: the first phase began on 28 March 2011, when Mirasierra station came into operation. This station, which is located directly below the engine shed, was built with piles and using the cut-and-cover system. Subsequently, to link up to the new station, an additional 95 meters of MTM tunnel was created, including in its final section a ventilation shaft for operational purposes. Moreover, in the first phase, the engine shed was completely revamped and the existing tunnel track was fully replaced.

In the second phase, 1,417 linear meters of MTM tunnel were built up to Paco de Lucía station, using 1 meter-thick continuous screening and the cut-and-cover system. The station has the necessary infrastructure for connecting the Metro and lines C3, C7 and C8 of the Cercanías commuter network. A ventilation and pump shaft and an emergency exit were also built.

This is the first Metro station whose concourse has been painted by street artists, specifically Okuda and Rosh333, with collaboration from Antonyo Marest, and coordinated by the Madrid Street Art Project, which has created an "impressive" mural which pays homage to this artist.
