Grupo Unidos por el Canal, led by Sacyr, began filling the lower chamber of the Panama Canal's new locks on the Pacific side yesterday after starting with the Atlantic side on June 11.

Roughly 40,000 m3 of water per hour will be pumped from Lake Miraflores into the new Pacific locks using electric and diesel pumps. This initial filling stage is slated to last about five days. The complete flooding and testing of each lock can take upwards of three to four months.

Among the most outstanding features of the project to construct the Panama Canal's third set of locks are the two locks which have eight rolling gates each and nine water-saving basins with a filling and emptying side system, resulting in significantly less fresh water taken from Lake Gatún
