Grupo Unidos por el Canal, led by Sacyr, successfully conducted the first opening and closing tests of gate number eight of the new Gatún locks on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal's third set of locks yesterday.

This gate, which connects the Panama Canal and the Caribbean Sea, underwent the first operational tests incorporating mechanical and electrical systems as well as position and speed sensors. Movement tests verify position, weight and buoyancy data.

Filling of the lower chamber of the new Pacific-side locks began on Monday, June 22, after filling was started on the Atlantic side on June 11.
