The Nyt app won the Best Use of Mobile category at the International News Media Association's Global Media Awards. Nyt, the supplement to Helsingin Sanomat (HS), the largest daily newspaper in the Nordic region, is the first media outlet in the world to use a chat-based user interface to deliver news.

The Nyt app has attracted thousands of subscribers. The Global Media Awards competition jury praised the app as being supersmart.

'This is what innovation is about. You try, learn, improve and win,' the jury said.

'This win proves that HS is a leader in digital development, even globally,' says Kaius Niemi, senior editor-in-chief of HS.

The award-winning Nyt app was released in November 2015. Its usability and application logic are similar to WhatsApp. The editorial office creates channels for following topics that interest the target group. For example, the 'Suomi mainittu' ('Mentions of Finland') and 'Uutta musiikkia' ('New Music') channels highlight interesting discoveries made by the editorial office in these topic areas.

'We wanted to speak to millennials in similar way to how young people use mobile phones for messaging. Now they have a friend who can select the best and most important pieces for them from the flood of online information. Readers can also use the app to chat with us, give feedback and send images. In addition, we can easily ask readers about topical issues. The editorial office has already received more than 10,000 messages from users, and the messaging is continuous.' 'This is the strongest relationship with readers that I have ever encountered,' says Jussi Pullinen, news editor responsible for Nyt.

In the Nyt app, advertising is part of the chat stream, and advertisers can message users about special promotions. Users also receive invitations to events such as film premieres.

'Commercial partners have found the app to be effective. Thousands of users have already had opportunities to attend events related to our commercial cooperation,' says Anne Saloranta, the development manager responsible for the project.
