Switzerland work permit quotas reached

Switzerland's short-term assignment (L permit) third quarter quotas for European Union (EU) and European Free Trade Agreement (EFTA) nationals have been reached.

Until the quotas for the fourth quarter are released, no L permits for EU/EFTA nationals will be issued. Depending on the practice of the individual Swiss canton, new work authorization applications will be either rejected or kept on hold until the quotas for the fourth quarter are released on October 1st.

In Switzerland, there are limits to how many EU/EFTA employees can be sent on assignment to Switzerland for a period longer than four months. There are no quotas for 120-day Work Authorizations.

Quotas for B permits for EU/EFTA nationals and quotas for non EU/EFTA nationals have not been reached.

In order to avoid rejections due to a lack of available quotas, employers should start planning for EU/EFTA nationals' fourth quarter assignments.

Please contact us to check on the canton specific practices as this varies from one canton to another.
