Columbia, S.C. (October 15, 2013)-Residents of North Charleston neighborhood, Charleston Farms, will have the opportunity to learn more about energy-efficiency measures that can translate to energy savings as part of SCE&G's new Neighborhood Energy Efficiency Program. The Public Service Commission of South Carolina approved the program, which was developed to provide eligible neighborhoods with energy audits and direct installation of energy saving improvements for its residents at no cost.

SCE&G worked with the City of North Charleston to select the Charleston Farms neighborhood as the first community in the area to benefit from the program based on a variety of factors such as census data and neighborhood demographics.

During a kick-off event held on Monday evening at the Charleston Farms Community Center, City of North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey joined SCE&G representatives, neighborhood association leaders and residents, to explain more about the program and how taking steps to conserve energy at home could help customers save in energy costs.

"In order to build a more sustainable community, every citizen must adopt more energy efficient practices, "said Mayor Summey. "We thank SCE&G for addressing these issues with the new Neighborhood Energy Efficiency Program which will not only help the residents of Charleston Farms reduce their energy usage but could also lead to cost savings."

Some of the energy-saving improvements that participants will receive at no cost could include:

  • CFL bulbs
  • electric water heater wraps and insulation for water pipes
  • Smart-Strip power strips
  • winterization kits for window/wall units
  • adjusting electric water heater temperature
  • HVAC filters

"We are dedicated to helping our customers find ways to be energy wise and make their homes more energy efficient," said Angie Webb, director of SCE&G Energy Efficiency Programs. "The Neighborhood Energy Efficiency Program will allow us to connect directly with our customers who need this assistance the most and work with them to create a more sustainable and energy efficient community."

The program will be active in the Charleston Farms neighborhood for approximately six weeks, with a goal of visiting 330 residents. SCE&G expects to expand the program in 2014 to additional cities and towns within its service territory.
