A U.S. electric utilities regulator is looking into a security breach at a Calgary, Alberta-based software company used by U.S. energy companies to manage production and distribution, Reuters news agency reported late Thursday on its website.
The North American Electric Reliability Corp. said in a statement Thursday it is "gathering more information to advise industry" about a security breach at Calgary-based Telvent, which is owned by France's Schneider Electric SA (SU.FR), the report said.
Telnet alerted its customers to the sophisticated attack, which affected its operations in the U.S., Canada and Spain, the Reuters report quoted cyber security news site KrebsOnSecurity.com saying Wednesday. It isn't immediately clear who is behind the attack or how it affected customers.
It is the latest breach targeting the energy sector, the report added.
