SDL (LSE: SDL) today introduced subscription-based access to customized Machine Translation via SDL Language Cloud. The cloud-based Machine Translation service is designed to work with SDL’s Trados Studio 2014, the industry leading translation software. As a critical component of the SDL Customer Experience Cloud, the release of the Machine Translation service follows the launch of SDL Language Cloud in June, building upon three decades of innovation in language technology.

There is an increasing amount of data being created in a growing number of languages, making the need for Machine Translation greater than ever. According to research from Common Sense Advisory, more than 90 percent of non-native English speakers rely on machine software to translate websites they visit. However, translators continue to lack the ability to easily customize this content to specific audiences.

“As an SDL Trados Studio user since 2006, I have experienced continued improvements to this product throughout the years,” said Janusz Madejski, translator. “With the new Machine Translation capabilities offered via SDL Language Cloud, I have witnessed an immediate increase of translation efficiency from the moment this add-in was installed. All internet searches for relevant terms are now at my fingertips without any additional effort or time.”

This latest addition to SDL Language Cloud answers the industry demand and provides a solution offering organizations access to high-quality, pre-trained and industry-specific Machine Translation engines. The combination of dedicated focus and advanced training delivers superior results that requires less post-translation editing and therefore can improve productivity by up to 50 percent.

“With the inherent global nature of businesses today coupled with the current content explosion, organizations need to be able to produce content faster, easier and more accurately for all audiences,” said Dominic Kinnon, CEO, SDL Language Solutions Division. “On the 30th anniversary of our translation technology, we continue to be at the forefront of language technology innovation as the Language Cloud’s Machine Translation is the first service to provide personalized translation to the localization supply chain helping brands achieve a critical aspect of seamless, global customer experience.”

Accessed via SDL Trados Studio 2014, the SDL Language Cloud Machine Translation service allows users to:

  • Instantly access a number of smart, industry-specific Machine Translation engines, including Automotive, Consumer Electronics, Travel, IT and Life Sciences
  • Personalize Machine Translation output with custom terms and brands names
  • Access trained industry engines for up to 40 percent increased output, accelerating translation productivity
  • Gain greater visibility and control over Machine Translation usage through comprehensive analytics

Founded in 1984, SDL Trados now has 200,000 licenses, translating an estimated two billion plus words each year and is used by 80 percent of the world’s translation professionals. Today, SDL Trados Studio remains the world’s leading computer assisted translation (CAT) tool that supports productivity for translators, translation agencies corporations, academic institutions and government. With the latest language innovation from SDL, SDL Language Cloud is accelerating efficiency, making translation technology more customized and accessible.

Another long-time SDL customer, Ralf Lemster, Managing Partner, Ralf Lemster Financial Translations GmbH, added: “We first started implementing SDL’s Trados translation technology almost 20 years ago. Today, we continue to use SDL technology as part of SDL’s Language Cloud, which helps us streamline the translation and quality-assurance process.”
