Serco : Lord Mayor opens new Canterbury waste depot

The Right Worshipful, The Lord Mayor of Canterbury, Cllr George Metcalfe, this week officially cut the ribbon to open a new waste depot built by Serco to support its waste collection services for Canterbury residents.

As part of his visit the Cllr Metcalfe spent time meeting Serco's Canterbury environmental services team, getting stuck in behind the wheel of a refuse vehicle and even helping to clean the streets by getting busy with a broom!

The new depot, located on Cotton Road, is the central hub for Serco environmental services in the city, including refuse and recycling collections, street cleaning and grounds maintenance.

The Cllr Metcalfe officially opened the facility at a ribbon cutting ceremony which was attended by staff from the Serco and Canterbury City Council team. After the ceremony, the Cllr Metcalfe spent time with some of the Serco crews - including street cleaning, grounds maintenance, refuse collection and the vehicle workshop - taking every opportunity to get involved by trying his hand at parts of their roles!

David Austin, Serco Contract Manager for Canterbury, said:

'It was a huge honour having the Cllr Metcalfe come to officially open our new depot and visit our teams. The work we do isn't always glamourous but it makes a huge difference for local residents, so it was great to be able share a behind the scenes look at what we do for the city.'

Cllr Metcalfe, said:

'Visiting the new depot was absolutely fascinating and gave me a unique opportunity to learn about what Serco does for us in Canterbury. All in all, it was one of the most memorable events in my Lord Mayoralty this year.'
