Apprentices from across Serco have helped transform a popular youth centre in Ravenscroft, Hook.

The eight-strong team spent Friday 1 April redecorating The Base Youth Centre. The project involved giving the walls a fresh coat of paint and planting new flowers and shrubs in the outside space.

The youth centre currently attracts around 200 young people aged 7-18yrs each week from Hook and the surrounding area who come to take part in a wide range of activities including sports, recreation, education and personal development.

Serco's Becky Namihas, a Business Administration (Level 3) apprentice from Hook, who attended the youth centre when she was younger, said: 'It was a real pleasure to give something back to the local community. The day was packed full of activities and everyone worked hard to help spruce up the youth centre.'

The apprentices are now hoping to establish a longer-term partnership between Serco - whose headquarters are in Bartley Wood Business Park, Hook - and The Base. They are currently arranging a donation of some spare office furniture and books and looking to volunteer their time at the centre.

Sara Wise, Youth Centre Manager, commented: 'I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team for such a fantastic effort. The Base looks much brighter and I'm confident the children will love it as much as I do. They all worked so hard and it's very much appreciated.'

The apprentices hope that the community project will also earn them extra points in the South West regional heats of the Brathay Apprentice Challenge as the team bid to become the apprentice team of the year.
