Three Serco defence teams have been announced as winners at the prestigious Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Health and Safety Awards.

The first of the three winners is the team working on the Skynet satellite. The team has attained the highest standard of Achievement Award, going straight in at Gold for their first submission since 2011 and is based in Bordon Hampshire, and in Colerne and Corsham, Wiltshire.

The second winning team is based at RAF Fylingdales in Yorkshire, where Serco's Solid State Phased Array Radar (SSPAR) contract team, who support the RAF achieved its 22nd year of continuous Gold Awards, and its 8th Order of Distinction.

The third winner is Serco's Air Surveillance and Control Systems (ASACS) team, who have achieved 16 continuous years of Gold Award and received their second Order of Distinction. This team is spread across several locations around the UK, including Fylingdales, and the RAF's radar sites at Buchan, Boulmer, Staxton Wold and Neatishead.

The RoSPA Awards scheme is open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas. Judges consider entrants' overarching occupational health and safety management systems. Practices such as leadership and workforce involvement are key. The awards are now in their 61st year.

Commenting on the three awards, Paul McCarter, Serco's Managing Director, Defence said: 'This is an outstanding achievement by the teams in our Defence business and we are really proud of them all. There is nothing more important to us than the safety of our colleagues and I am really delighted that our efforts in this area have been recognised by RoSPA.'

The teams will be presented with their awards during a ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole hotel in July. A Gold Achievement award is a reflection of the safety standards, culture and leadership at every level. It is recognition of our values and is a reason for genuine pride.

These awards were accomplished during a special year for the family-safety charity RoSPA. Julia Small, RoSPA's head of awards and events, said: 'The RoSPA Awards are the most prestigious in the world of occupational health and safety, and held in high regard around the world, as winning one demonstrates an organisation's commitment to maintaining an excellent health and safety record. Achieving the standard required is no mean feat. This is a special year in the history of RoSPA, and we congratulate all of our winners in this, our centenary year'.
