Did you know that there's a small, but growing, team of software developers, analysts, mathematicians, scientists and engineers who work at the cutting edge of the water industry improving the quality and efficiency of the UK water supply? The team is part of a broader technology-focussed, stock-market listed company that supplies leading hardware and software to the UK and global water industry. You might be even more surprised to hear that this team of specialists is based in leafy Dorking; a historic market town less than one hour south of central London, known perhaps more for its traditional ales than as a suburb of silicon valley. Yvonne Hackwell, Talent Acquisition Specialist, spoke with Mark Hinton, Business Optimisation Director at Servelec Technologies about the current opportunities available to find out more.

Servelec Technologies supplies an end-to-end solution for data capture, analysis, monitoring and control. How does the team in Dorking fit into this bigger picture?

At Servelec Technologies, we have a long established heritage in the water industry. We have been developing leading-edge hardware and software to help water companies manage and exploit their assets for over thirty years. Having reached a market-leading position with these offerings the next logical step for us was to help water companies to optimise the data they capture and analyse how best to manage and operate their assets to improve customer service, increase efficiencies and deliver a sustainable solution. The team in Dorking may be better known by some as Tynemarch which became part of Servelec Technologies in 2013 but our expertise and core values remain true. We have a long and respected history as experts in decision support, automated control and planning software for the utility sector and associated specialist services. Our software products suite is used for optimisation of the data captured from SCADA, telemetry systems and other sources in the fields of asset management and water network control.

What does an average day at the Dorking office look like?

As with many places, the concept of 'an average day' is a tricky one to define in this fast-paced environment. We have an integrated team of various skill sets and experience levels who all work alongside each other on a number of intricate projects. Whether you're a recent graduate or a seasoned professional we offer a host of interesting, challenging and above all rewarding projects. We are keen to ensure our people are given the opportunities to grow in their careers and have an opportunity to develop skills and work in different product and service areas if they wish. Some might specialise in problem solving, complex modelling or product development whilst others could be meeting with the client team one day and working towards the intended solution the next. In helping new people fit into our team we do our best to listen and respond to individual aspirations and ambitions.

The team in Dorking brings a varied range of skills to clients' projects. What kind of people are part of the team?

The team includes individuals from a variety of academic backgrounds often with a leaning towards numeracy skills and complex modelling for analysts and the latest technical skills for our developers. Above all our people are enthusiastic, passionate specialists who want to make a difference - both in their own careers and to our software products and our customers.

Due to the ongoing expansion of the team alongside the focus on broadening our UK and overseas client base, we currently have a number of opportunities at all levels from graduates through to senior level. These include a variety of roles such as developers, analysts, testers and support engineers. Our focus is as much on spotting the right individuals as it is to fill a specific role. If someone is made of the right stuff we are keen to get them on board.

What do you offer to those joining the team?

Servelec Technologies offers a diverse range of opportunities in Dorking and our Sheffield offices to thrive in a supportive and development-oriented environment. At a senior level, there's a high degree of peer-to-peer support and development, and each graduate is fully mentored and supported to enable individuals to reach their full potential. The work is varied and rewarding - one day you could be helping a water company plan their whole asset management programme for the coming five year period, and the next you could be saving a water company 10% operational expenditure through implementation of one of our market leading software tools. There is also an increasing opportunity to work internationally as our range of products start to capitalise on international market opportunities arising from Servelec's global presence, as recently referenced with our PIONEER project with Sydney Water.

What should candidates do if they're interested in joining the team?

If all this sounds like you, we would love to hear from you. There is a host of information on our website which describes products we develop and the kind of projects we deliver for our customers. If interested, people are welcome to speak with me for an informal discussion or can contact the recruitment team to find out more.
